Freie Universität Berlin has joined the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). The goal of this Europe-wide initiative is to evaluate research output in a holistic and quality-oriented manner—rather than relying on metrics such as the Journal Impact Factor.

By joining the initiative, Freie Universität commits to developing an action plan within one year and implementing a reform cycle over five years. In the future, contributions such as research data, software, and knowledge transfer, as well as open science practices, will also be evaluated.

The University Library coordinates the university-wide process and supports researchers by providing infrastructure, guidance, and assistance in the participatory development of discipline-specific evaluation approaches.
