The research project “A colonial science throughout? Sociology in Arabic Journals (1885 to 1952)” (funded by the German Research Foundation) examines conceptions of sociology as well as sociological perspectives in Arabic periodicals between 1885 and 1952. The starting point of the period under consideration is marked by an intensified engagement with questions of society in the Arabic press, while the endpoint is defined by the Egyptian Revolution, which led to a broader institutionalization of sociology.
 
Job description:
• Research assistance in the DFG-funded project “A colonial science throughout? Sociology in Arabic Journals (1885 to 1952).”
• Completion of a doctoral dissertation (monograph) on conceptions of sociology in Arabic journals during the above-mentioned period
• Organization of an academic workshop related to the project’s topic
• The third-party funded research project provides an opportunity to do a doctorate (the position is intended to support the candidate’s own academic qualification (doctoral degree in Islamic Studies))

Requirements:
• Completed academic university degree (Master’s or Magister) in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (or a closely related field)

Desirable:
• Very good command of Modern Arabic (C1)
• very good proficiency in English (C1)
• Background in sociology or another social science
• Knowledge of modern Arab societies and intellectual history
• Experience in independently conducting academic research projects
• Ability to work effectively in a team
