Integrated Japanese Studies

Whether it is possible to apply for a spot in a program and whether the program has an admission cap (NC) or has unrestricted (no NC) is determined anew each semester. A distinction is made between the first semester and higher semester.

For admittance to the master’s program applicants need to fulfill the following admission requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Japanese studies or an equivalent university degree that corresponds to the program at Freie Universität Berlin in terms of content and structure, with a proportion of Japan-specific courses and language classes of at least 120 credit points.

  • Proof of Japanese language skills (level B2 CEFR). This proof is provided with a Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Japanese Studies (Freie Universität Berlin) or an equivalent studies program, comprising curricular integrated studies in Japan of at least one year.

  • Proof of English language skills (written and oral; level B2 CEFR).

The DSH - or German Language University Entrance Exam for Foreign Students - is obligatory for all applicants whose first language is not German and who have earned their initial degree from a university (or equivalent institution) where the language of instruction is not German.

Students do not pay any tuition fees, the university only charges semester fees and contributions each semester.

The consecutive, research-oriented master’s program deepens and broadens the fundamental knowledge in the field of Japanology acquired in a bachelor’s program in Japanese studies/Eastern Asian studies. The focus can be either on cultural studies or social studies pertaining to Japan. The aim of the master’s program is to broaden students’ academic knowledge and competencies in the field and to qualify them professionally.
