Terms of Use for Digital Resources

Primo is your starting point for accessing electronic resources licensed to Freie Universität Berlin.

Owing to licensing regulations, access to e-books, e-journals, databases and other resources is restricted to computers in the university network. Freie Universität members who have an FU-Account can set up remote access to the electronic resources on their private devices.

  • Freie Universität students and staff:

    • at library or staff computers, access is unconditional
    • at external or private devices, remote access requires an FU-Account and
  • External users – e.g., students from other institutions, alumni, guest auditors:

    • at library or staff computers, access is unconditional
    • at external or private devices, access is not allowed.
  • Charité-students:
    • You can apply for an FU-Account and get access to both institutional networks. Freie Universität members can access resources lisensed to Charité only by going to one of the Charité library units in person.

All rights, in particular copyright- / intellectual-property-rights-related terms of use and exploitation, rest exclusively with the respective providers and publishers of resources and information services.

Freie Universität members and other authorized users may

  • conduct searches
  • copy selected data, e.g., bibliographic datasets, abstracts, journal articles, full texts, and excerpts, to their device’s memory
  • save and print downloaded data exclusively for their own personal or academic use.
Prohibited use:
  • downloading data systematically, e.g., downloading entire journal volumes
  • downloading full texts automatically, e.g., using “full text search” functionality in citation management software, such as Endnote or Citavi.
  • stocking data in a private archive “just in case”
  • using special software, such as robots, spiders, crawlers, to download data
  • passing on data – whether in whole or in part, whether as photography, on paper, or on data-storage devices.
  • using data commercially or providing access to resources to third parties
  • translating, adapting, modifying, as well as publicly presenting, displaying, or performing.

Abuse of these terms may result in suspension of the FU-Account and library card, including a ban on entering University Library locations.
