The FUBiS program allows participants to choose and combine subject courses in English and language courses in German. The subject courses cover content as diverse as the tradition of cabaret as an art form in Berlin, Germany under National Socialism, European art history, and international (peace) negotiations. Freie Universität Berlin awards credits for all FUBiS courses according to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which students can then have recognized at their home university.
Both language and subject courses utilize the city of Berlin as a resource for teaching and learning and actively incorporate it into the curriculum. In keeping with this extended classroom approach, excursions, tours, and guest lecturers form an integral part of the program. The FUBiS program also offers an exciting recreational program for all participants, including a visit to the Reichstag, a boat tour on the Spree River, and a variety of different day trips and excursions.
FUBiS is dedicated to providing a first-class, highly organized program and tailor-made support to participants. The program reinforces Freie Universität Berlin’s status as an international network university by maintaining partnerships with prestigious universities around the world.
The FUBiS Summer University was held for the first time in 1998 and now offers three terms per year: two summer terms and one winter term. Every year around 600 students from approximately forty countries come to Freie Universität Berlin as part of the FUBiS program. FUBiS places a particular emphasis on the importance of sustainability and aligns the program and its courses with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
