Open Studio on Soojin Chang, multidisciplinary artist and PhD candidate
Soojin Chang is a multidisciplinary artist and PhD candidate working across video, performance, sound, and writing. This open studio will introduce her practice through a screening of BXBY (2022), a year-long performance as a multispecies surrogate in which she blurs the lines between art and life through self-filming and bodily experimentation. This will be presented alongside an early in-progress demonstration of a new work involving laser, water, sound, and the body, which will develop into a performance later this year.
Both are instances of her self-filming practice, which draws on and intervenes in Yuk Hui’s concept of cosmotechnics: the unification of cosmic and moral order through technics.
Through self-experimentation, she proposes that reality is not something “out there” being mediated to a separate self, but a continuous field of differentiation in which the self already participates. Aesthetic encounter is proposed as one of the ways this reorientation can be recognised.
